The GMC/Swab – 21-6 was a uniquely capable unit, designed for both firefighting and heavy rescue operations. Equipped with a 200-gallon tank and a 30 gpm, 850 psi Hale high-pressure pump, this unit provided the flexibility needed for various fireground tasks, particularly where high-pressure water delivery was necessary.
Powered by a 454 cu in. V8 gasoline engine, it featured a 5-speed manual transmission with an optional 2-speed gear for additional torque and versatility, especially on challenging terrains. The 6kw generator ensured sufficient power for on-scene operations, powering lights and other necessary equipment during extended incidents.
One of its defining features was the combination of winches: a 20,000 lb. front-mounted winch and a 10,000 lb. rear winch, which made this unit a valuable tool for heavy rescue operations, particularly vehicle extrications and large-scale recoveries. The GMC/Swab – 21-6 was an essential part of the department’s fleet, capable of handling complex tasks that required both firefighting and rescue capabilities, ensuring it left a lasting legacy in its years of service.
