March 29, 2012 – Over 30 high school students safely evacuated their school bus just before the vehicle burst into flames and was destroyed. The bus traveling in the 300 block of McKennans Church Road was heading to McKean High School when the vehicle caught fire.

Mill Creek Fire Company and Hockessin Fire Company were dispatched to the alarm at approximately 7:15 AM. When Hockessin firefighters arrived they found the school bus fully involved. Fire apparatus from Mill Creek Fire Company responding to the alarm found their path blocked by another school bus east on McKennans Church Road and had to detour around the scene to get to the fire. The school bus was making a U-turn on McKennans Church Road to avoid the bus fire when it broke down just east of the fire blocking both travel lanes.

Mill Creek Fire Company credits the school bus driver for his quick reaction and evacuating all students from the bus without any injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
