Elizabeth J. “Betty” Tull, born on May 22, 1933, passed away on November 1, 2022. A lifelong resident of Marshallton, Betty lived in the same home that housed five generations of her family. She attended Marshallton School, graduating in 1948 with multiple honors. An accomplished student and athlete, Betty was a basketball player, May Queen, Yearbook Editor, Vice President of her graduation class, and the recipient of the American Legion Award for Outstanding Student. She also achieved the highest score on the Delaware State Achievement Test.
Betty continued her education and graduated from Conrad High School in 1951 as an honor student, ranking among the top five graduates. She played softball for the Marshallton Team, Marshallton School, and Conrad High School. Betty pursued multiple college programs while employed at Havek, Hercules, and Ametek, where she worked for 47 years. Her off-campus courses led to the equivalent of an Associate’s degree in Business Management. After retiring, she continued working as Human Resources Manager for Guardian Construction Company for another six years.
In 1951, Betty joined the Ladies Auxiliary of the Mill Creek Fire Company, where she remained active until her passing. Throughout her service, she held numerous offices, including President, Vice President, Financial Secretary, Chaplain, and Chairman of the Board of Directors, and she received the President’s Award in 2002. Betty also served as 2nd Vice President, 1st Vice President, and Secretary of the New Castle County Ladies Auxiliary. In 2002, she was inducted into the Ladies Auxiliary Hall of Recognition for the Delaware Volunteer Firefighters Association.
Betty was deeply involved in her community. She served as President of the Marshallton Civic Association for many years and was an active member of Marshallton United Methodist Church, where she held various offices, including President of the Trustees and Lay Leader.
Betty is survived by her brother, Lee Tull (Jane); her great-nephew, David Wolf Hudson (Jessica); her great-great-nephew, Elliott; her caretakers, Anne Parke and Karen James; and many nieces and nephews.
A viewing will be held on Monday, November 14, from 9:30 to 11:00 AM, followed by a service at 11:00 AM at McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19808. Burial will follow in Silverbrook Cemetery.
