Lawrence Mergenthaler

Lawrence “Larry” Mergenthaler, 85, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 31, 2020, surrounded by his family at his granddaughter’s home.

Born to the late Charles and Rose (O’Neil) Mergenthaler, Larry grew up in Wilmington, Delaware. He graduated from Conrad High School and joined the Delaware National Guard. After his military service, he became a successful entrepreneur.

In 1958, Larry co-founded and owned Mergenthaler Bus Services. He joined the Mill Creek Fire Company in 1953 and became Fire Chief in 1976. Over the years, he served several terms on the Board of Directors and was honored as Fireman of the Year.

Larry was active in numerous organizations, including the Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firemen’s Association (VFA), Delaware Volunteer Firefighter’s Association (DVFA), Del-Mar-Va VFA, New Castle County Volunteer Firefighter’s Association (NCCVFA), and the Sunshine Committee. He was known for his charm, sharp wit, wise remarks, and his big heart, especially for those with disabilities.
