Mill Creek Fire Company celebrated 86 years of serving the community with a picnic on August 24th, 2013. The Volunteer Appreciation Picnic was also combined with our 86th Anniversary Celebration. Bringing both events together allowed the fire company to accommodate a larger group of membership and their immediate family members. During the course of the year many volunteers attend various meetings, work on committees, maintain our facilities and apparatus, etc. This is the time to show our appreciation for their hard work and dedication to the fire service.
Over 180 members, employees and their families attended the event. Everyone enjoyed a barbeque style lunch with BBQ chicken, pulled pork, hot dogs, hamburgers, corn-on-the-cob along with crabs fresh from the Eastern Shore. A large inflatable water slide and other games entertained young and old.
In keeping with tradition, the leadership of the fire company announced the Volunteer of the Year for 2012 bestowing the award to Barry Kelly. Barry Kelly has been a volunteer member since 1995 and serves as a safety officer and board of director. Barry also has been the chairperson of the pension committee for almost 15 years and the fire company recording secretary for nearly ten years. Barry comes from a family of volunteer firefighters and is truly an asset for Mill Creek Fire Company. In addition to the Volunteer of the Year, recognition was given to the top 15 responders for fire and EMS.
One special award was given to Joseph Mullins, Sr for 75 years of service. Joe was the fire chief for 25 years, served as president and on the board of directors. About a year ago Joe assisted with a training class on pumping operations. He still attends monthly company meetings.
The Mill Creek Fire Company would like to extend a huge thank you to the Indian River Fire Company and Delaware City Fire Company for providing apparatus and manpower to cover the fire district during the Volunteer Appreciation Picnic and Anniversary Celebration.
Additionally, a special thank you is given to the Pike Creek Automotive Center, Bella Vista Restaurant, Ruby Tuesdays, Anthony’s Coal Fire Pizza, and Ted Weaver for their generous door prize donations.
