Your Journey to Active Membership: Commit, Train, Serve with Mill Creek Fire Company
New members of the Mill Creek Fire Company are expected to meet several requirements:
Probationary Period

12 Months

Committee Service

Probationary members must serve on an active committee. One option is the Public Relations Committee, which provides opportunities to engage with the community and build relationships with other members.

Call Response Requirement

To achieve active membership, probationary members must respond to at least 30 calls per year.

Training

New members typically complete anywhere from 124 to 160 hours of training in their first year, depending on their involvement in fire and EMS operations.

Eligibility for Active Membership

Probationary members who remain in good standing and meet all requirements are eligible for active membership after 12 months. A majority vote from the active members is required for this status change.

Step 1: Preliminary Requirements

Before applying, ensure that you meet the following criteria:

Step 2: Complete the Application

Once you’ve confirmed you meet the requirements, fill out the membership application. You can find it here on our website. Completed applications should be mailed to:

Mill Creek Fire Company
Membership Committee
P.O. Box 5446
Marshallton, DE 19808

Please note: You can email the application to membership@millcreekfire.org. The application should not be dropped off at the fire station. (no advertising emails.)

Step 3: Schedule an Interview

After submitting your application, a member of our Membership Committee will reach out to you to schedule an interview. Interviews are typically held in the evenings, and we will accommodate your schedule.

Step 4: Attend the Interview

During the interview, you’ll have the opportunity to meet some of our members and share your motivation for joining the fire service. We will also ask questions such as:

  • Why do you want to join the fire service?
  • How much do you know about firefighting?
  • What’s in your future?

In addition to the interview, you will:

  • Learn about the history of MCFC and what to expect as a member.
  • Receive an affidavit to sign. [You can review the affidavit here.]
  • Be provided with instructions on obtaining a criminal background check and driving record check. These checks are required for all applicants and typically cost around $60. Successful applicants may be reimbursed for this cost upon becoming a probationary member (with receipt).

To expedite the process, you can submit our short online form. We will also need the filled-out paper application for the interview.
You may choose to complete your background and driving checks before the interview. However, please note that you will only be reimbursed if you successfully become a member.

Step 5: Membership Approval

If the Membership Committee recommends your application and there are no issues with your background check or driving record, your application will be presented at a regular MCFC business meeting. A majority vote from the general membership is required for acceptance as a probationary member.

Regular business meetings are held on the third Monday of each month at 7:00 PM at Chambers Memorial Hall, located at 3900 Kirkwood Highway.
